Models of Invention: the Science Fiction of Leonardo da Vinci
Models of Invention: the science fiction of Leonardo da Vinci takes a new look at da Vinci's work as a form of futurism. It explores his genius for finding connections between design, art, science and technology and is intended to spark curiosity and to encourage inventive research and design. The series of brass and wooden models in this exhibition have been painstakingly constructed by Dr Roberto Guatelli, following Leonardo's scientific and technical drawings.
The models demonstrate Leonardo's uncanny foretelling of 'modern' innovations such as the parachute, the clock mechanism and the military tank. They show his deep understanding of machinery, long before any other individual even considered these concepts, let alone developed them.
Originally commissioned by IBM, in the early 1990s the models were toured extensively to University venues in the US, then in partnership with UTS, to museums around Australia and Asia. Recently the models were carefully restored by Jules Gull for this new exhibition.
